TATANKA: STORY OF THE BISON
DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA
Wyss Associates, Inc. was honored to be the project designer for "Tatanka: Story of the Bison" that was funded by actor, Kevin Costner.
The cultural attraction offers a range of experiences at the interpretive center, living history encampment with the showcase being the bronze bison (tatanka) sculptures reenacting a bison jump scene. The scene is composed of a total of 17 pieces: 14 bison being pursued by three Lakota riders on bareback. These figures artfully depict the earliest and most effective form of hunting bison called a bison jump.
The site integrates with the museum, illustrating the symbiotic relationship between bison and the Lakota people, who traditionally relied on the animal for food, clothing, shelter, religious ceremonies and more.
