DIGNITY: OF EARTH AND SKY
CHAMBERLAIN, SOUTH DAKOTA
Wyss Associates managed this unique project from its conception, working as the project manager for the initial sculpture and for the ensuing plaza projects. Working directly with Governor Dennis Daugaard, the project required coordination and permitting with the SDDOT. The plaza is be a place to gather, hold educational events, ceremonies and to contemplate Dignity’s meaning. The plaza includes custom seating with several benches and tables, custom tree grates, boulders and indigenous plantings. The project continues to evolve as our office and the owner are planning an elevated walkway that will provide panoramic views overlooking the Missouri River.
The statue and plaza is a gift from Norm and Eunabel McKie of Rapid City to the people of South Dakota. The generous Dignity gift has wowed visitors from across the globe. Some knew what they were searching for — unsurprising, since word spread quickly about South Dakota’s newest larger-than-life sculpture. Many visitors discover Dignity by seeing her from the road and pulling off to investigate. Some come looking only for a rest stop and find themselves mesmerized by her quiet grace.
However you find her, Dignity leaves an impression. Her gaze will never break and her beauty — and message — will be celebrated for generations
