All of us at Wyss Associates, Inc. are thrilled to see the SD GF&P Outdoor Campus West open this month. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this dream a reality. Our firm has assisted with this project for many years. In 2006 we evaluated 8 separate sites for this facility. The Sturgis Road site was never before considered for the Outdoor Campus, and offered a wide range of natural features such as spring fed ponds, riparian landscape, adjacent to the pine covered Wilderness Park, all with convenient access to Sturgis Rd. in Rapid City, SD. Some of the outdoor designed facilities include a waterfall, a beach, a casting pier, non-disturbing wetland boardwalks, stepping stones at the beach, five outdoor classrooms including a picnic shelter, two shade structures for group interpretive instruction, a “treehouse” elevated platform, hunting center at the base of the archery grounds, extensive native landscape plantings and a variety of other features. The outdoor campus is centered around a two acre natural playground, large native grass area and other facilities to make this a fun place to learn about the great outdoors.
