The vibrant Rapid City downtown and the immensely popular Rushmore Plaza Civic Center are in the same City Center vicinity with a separation by Memorial Park and Omaha Street. The Memorial Park Promenade seeks to close the gap and strengthen the ties between the two popular anchors. Wyss Associates, Inc. designed the Promenade to be a grand walkway through Memorial Park. The promenade is well lit for nighttime use, with attractive plantings and open views in each direction so users can see their destination. A safer and more direct Omaha Street crossing was incorporated into the Promenade design. Included with the Promenade is a series of overlooks and fishing piers to promote the Memorial Pond as an attractive and useful amenity for the community. Throughout te pedestrian friendly pathway are ample seating areas that provide spontaneous social gatherings, room for vendors, small street-scale performances and other urban activities. The project is 100% private funded from Destination Rapid City, a private group formed to promote downtown Rapid City as a destination for community members and visitors alike. To observe South Dakota’s 125th Anniversary of Statehood, Rapid City dedicated the new Memorial Park Promenade and Legacy Commons Playground in November 2014.
